Salty liquoriceThe not-so-sweet sweet

Salty liquorice is an acquired taste - and many in Finland, Scandinavia and the Netherlands learn to love its sharp, sour flavours during childhood. But for those who are introduced to it later in life, the black stuff can be hard to stomach.

What is Salty liquoriceSalmiak or Salmiakki

Popular in Finland, Scandinavia, Netherlands and Northern Germany.

Ammonium chloride added to the liquorice gives it a salty taste.

Its name, Salmiak or Salmiakki, comes from the Latin for Ammonium chloride, Sal ammoniacus.
